Time Sifters Archaeological Society is the Sarasota Chapter of the Florida Anthropological Society, and is dedicated to the preservation of Florida's historical and archaeological heritage. The society's main purpose is to help "teach the public that archaeology is a nonrenewable resource and that its preservation must be enforced by education and legislation." Its programs vary from local topics to international discoveries. Members range in age and background, but share the common interest in preserving the past. They participate in local and regional projects by serving as research and lab volunteers, as well as excavation labor. Education about Florida's archaeological record is promoted through society participation in FAS programs.

Accomplishments include:

  • ‘Rescued’ a 2,000 year-old Indian cemetery

  • Participated in major Calusa Indian digs

  • Assisted in excavation and creation of the unique ‘Window to the Past’ exhibition at Historic Spanish Point

  • Participating in archaeology outreach programs: “Looking for Angola," “Traces of Our Past,” and “Trail of the Lost Tribes”

  • Supporting archaeology education for Sarasota and Manatee county schoolchildren

  • Supporting preservation of local historical and archaeological resources

Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month September through May, at the Selby Library in downtown Sarasota at 6:00pm.

Each TimeSifters meeting features a presentation concerning archaeology.  Many of the speakers are connected with universities in Florida. Others come from out of state universities, have written books about archaeology, or through education, experience or travel have acquired expertise in areas of archaeology.  Many members – some who are professors or teachers, others who are avocational archaeologists, have given presentations.  Subject matter varies, so that in a given year there may be presentations about Florida, other areas in the United States, Mexico, Central America, South America, Europe, and the Near East.
