NEWS FROM THE VAHS PRESIDENT, SUE CHAPMAN

The Year of the Pioneer continues as the Venice Area Historical Society meets at Village on the Isle on the 4th Tuesday of the month.

We enjoyed pioneer vignettes of the Webb Family as performed by the Historic Spanish Point Players in November.

On December 3, 2008, the yearly fundraiser fashion show brunch will be held at the Venice Yacht Club.  Please contact Sue Chapman for tickets.  (941) 412-0151

We are proud to be giving special tours of the Historic Venice Train Station as treats for the “Ride with Pride” program of Sarasota Schools.

VAHS will also be hosting 100 5th graders in December from Garden Elementary School as the culmination of their studies about Venice history.  They have already had two presentations of the film “Imagining Venice”, accompanied by Claire Suter, from our Speaker’s Bureau.

In January we will be hosting Dr. Andrew Frank speaking on “The Florida Frontier”.  Dr. Frank has been sponsored by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council.

The Venice Area Historical Society offers many benefits:

  1. Monthly program meetings which are normally held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Venice on the Isle Meeting Room.  [These meetings typically include a guest speaker and/or a slide or power-point presentation ...always on an interesting historical subject or sometimes the focus is on a person who has lived in Venice for a very long time and therefore can relate their memories to newcomers.] There is also informal socializing and light refreshments.

  2. Two luncheons per year that also feature interesting speakers.

  3. Day trips to historic sites and other area attractions.

  4. Quarterly VAHS newsletter

  5. Opportunities to enhance the historic preservation of your area
